What Is a Colonoscopy?

The Gold Standard for Colon Cancer Prevention

A colonoscopy is an outpatient procedure that lets a gastroenterologist examine the entire lining of the colon and rectum with a thin, flexible camera called a colonoscope. Because polyps can be found and removed during the same exam, colonoscopy does more than detect cancer. It helps prevent it.

Dr. Awan performs screening, diagnostic and surveillance colonoscopies for patients in Denton, Lewisville, Coppell and surrounding communities, with sedation for your comfort.

Who Needs a Colonoscopy?

When a Colonoscopy Is Recommended

National guidelines recommend that most adults at average risk begin colorectal cancer screening at age 45. You may need a colonoscopy sooner if any of the following apply.

Age 45 or Older

Average-risk adults should start screening at 45 and repeat every 10 years if results are normal.

Family History

A parent, sibling or child with colon cancer or advanced polyps may mean earlier and more frequent screening.

Rectal Bleeding

Blood in the stool or on toilet paper should always be evaluated by a GI specialist.

Change in Bowel Habits

Diarrhea, constipation or narrower stools lasting more than a few weeks.

Iron-Deficiency Anemia

Unexplained low iron can be a sign of slow bleeding in the digestive tract.

Prior Polyps or IBD

Surveillance colonoscopy for patients with past polyps, Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis.

Colon Cancer Screening in Denton

Why Colon Cancer Screening Matters

Colorectal cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths in the United States, but it is also one of the most preventable. Most colon cancers develop slowly from polyps over several years. Finding and removing those polyps during a colonoscopy stops cancer before it starts.

Colonoscopy vs. Stool-Based Tests

Stool tests such as FIT or stool DNA tests are options for some average-risk adults. They are convenient, but they cannot remove polyps, and a positive result always requires a follow-up colonoscopy. Colonoscopy remains the only test that can both find and remove polyps in a single visit. Dr. Awan can help you decide which screening option fits your health history.

Making Bowel Prep Easier

A clean colon allows even small, flat polyps to be seen. Follow your prep instructions closely, drink plenty of clear liquids, and finish the entire preparation. Our team will give you step-by-step instructions and answer your questions before your procedure.

Diagnostic Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy is also used to find the cause of symptoms such as rectal bleeding, chronic diarrhea, abdominal pain and anemia, and to monitor inflammatory bowel disease. Biopsies can be taken during the exam for a precise diagnosis.

Colonoscopy FAQs

Have another question? Our team is happy to help.

Colonoscopy is performed with sedation, so most patients are comfortable and remember little of the procedure. Some people feel mild bloating or gas afterward, which passes quickly.

If your colonoscopy is normal and you are at average risk, it is typically repeated every 10 years. If polyps are found or you have a higher risk, Dr. Awan will recommend a shorter interval.

No. Because of the sedation, you must have an adult drive you home and you should not drive for the rest of the day.

Most adults at average risk should begin screening at age 45. People with a family history or other risk factors may need to start earlier.
